Karen Gravano, the star of the VH1 reality show Mob Wives, had filed a lawsuit against Rockstar Games for the unauthorized use of her likeness in Grand Theft Auto V earlier in the year. Rockstar has fired back saying that Karen is “too fat” for the character to be her and she has no grounds to sue.
The character in question, named Antonia Bottino, is found during a random encounter mission. Her story is that her father Sammy “Sonny” Bottino who was an underboss in the mob family, ratted them out. Due to this inconvenience, they had to move from the East to the West coast.
Karen’s real life story (which she wrote a book about entitled Mob Daughter) is the exact same story. Her father, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano was an underboss of the Gambino crime family who also turned against them and cooperated with the feds. Her family was then forced to move from the East coast to the West coast for protection. The character’s look and mannerisms are just too similar and she’s “100% sure” it’s her completely. She filed suit for $40 million.
Rockstar had said that Karen is too fat to be Antonia. They also claim that one of Karen’s friends has also admitted that the character looks like her, but thinner. This case seems like one that both sides don’t have much of a leg to stand on. On the one hand, Karen made her life story public with the book she wrote. On the other, Rockstar stating the character can’t be her because she’s heavier than the character is a baffling defense but one they’re using nonetheless.
